Project 2 - Week 3: Textures and Final Submission

Final Model

I built two light rail stops on either side of the road, one elevated above ground level and one below ground. They have opposing themes of warm and cool to add an artistic element to a usually boring setting. The platforms all have Opal tap-posts and ramp escalators to allow for wheelchair access without requiring additional structures. The platforms are made from alternating triangles of asphalt, polished steel and coloured glass, and the supporting posts are made from polished steel.

This light rail stop is elevated above ground level to allow cars to pass freely on the road and to allow pedestrians to pass freely underneath the platform itself. The sculptural wall of the platform is covered with solar panels to provide passive power generation during daylight hours. It also has a pattern of LEDs in red, orange and yellow which are powered by the energy generated by the solar panels. These light up at night, making the platform an artistic display as well as a transport facility.

This is the underground light rail platform and underpass. This platform mirrors the upper platform with its similar, but upside-down, form and cold theme. The underpass connects the two sides of the road so that pedestrians have the option to cross the road at the existing crossing or to use the direct path that the underpass provides. The underpass also provides access to the underground platform.

I applied these textures to strips running along the floor of the underpass. These represent coloured lights which point in the direction of the light rail stops, blue to the underground platform and orange to the upper platform.

I applied this texture to the wall of the underground platform as it reminded me of cascading snow and I wanted to build on the cold wintry theme. This is also why I made the icy crystalline texture that can be seen on the sweeping curves under the platform and the back of the platform wall.

I used this texture to depict a cluster of white LEDs that provide light to the underground platform and situated these lights at the top of the platform wall.

Project 2 - Week 2: Mashes

Chosen Mash

I wanted to further build on the concepts of my first block. To do this I turned the upper block into a curved form to really emphasise the sleek flow that Amanda Levete's structures possess. The bottom block remained rectilinear to show a different way in which simple blocks can form something more complex as in Enric Miralles' architecture.

Project 2 - Week 1: Blocks

Chosen Block

I took inspiration from both Enric Miralles and Amanda Levete when making this block. I wanted to combine the smooth flowing forms that Amanda created with Enric's way of joining simple geometric forms to create something complex.

Project 1 - Week 4: Final Edits

Final Model

In the final stage I made a few minor edits to the exhibition space. I added corrugated protruding pipes hanging from the ceiling to add to the steampunk bunker aesthetic. I kept these decorations to a minimum so that the space wouldn't be too cluttered and so that the focus in the space would be on the works displayed there. I also added some features to the stairs. There are now steel brackets that sweep up around the stairway and can be used as handrails. These add an additional level of geometry to the stairs and accentuate the steampunk theme.

Project 1 - Week 3: Materials

Upper Level (Revival Cycles) + Exhibition Space

This week I added terrain and materials to the structure. I used textured steel for the majority of the building and aluminium for the wings, winglets and protrusions. The upward facing surfaces on top of the building have a texture inspired by circuitry which I edited from a texture that I drew. This combination of this futuristic design and the more basic, raw materials represents a blend of different technologies.

I applied this texture to the floor of the exhibition space. Since it is the middle space of the building as a whole, I felt that it should have some aspect that blended influences from both Revival Cycles and CJ Hendry. The lines of varying thickness represent CJ Hendry's art and the barbed wire appearance shows the metallic, mechanical influence of Revival Cycles.

Basement (CJ Hendry)

I created this crystalline texture to add to the terrain and the pillars of the basement. The terrain is modelled on a granite plateau with cavernous areas underneath and the crystals add an element of beauty to the area. These can be viewed through the glass when coming down the stairs from the exhibition space.

Project 1 - Week 2: Progression and Stairs

Upper Level (Revival Cycles) + Exhibition Space + Stairs

This week I doubled the size of the structure and added an extra level. The ground level will be the exhibition space and the upper two floors will be Revival Cycles workshops. I also marked out areas for the windows. A set of stairs connects the ground floor to the first floor. This will be made of steel and glass. There is also a hydraulic lift that provides access to all floors and is large enough to accommodate a reasonably large motorbike. This will also be made of metal and glass.

Basement (CJ Hendry) + Stairs

I modified the basement so that it now has an aesthetic frame around it to accentuate the curves and a sweeping section that will connect to the stairs. These stairs are in a glass tunnel and will hang from the ceiling. These stairs will connect the ground floor to the basement.
